Four Cool Ways to Spend Long Summer Days

Don’t let Southwest Florida’s infamous heat, humidity and pesky afternoon rainstorms force you to stay indoors all summer. Cape Coral Lifestyle visited four fantastic and family-friendly places to explore, play and relax. Be sure to bring your camera to capture these cool adventures!

Banana Bay Tour Company

With the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to forget we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Captain JR Trepper of Banana Bay Tour Company wants to help you remember.

“Most people have to get up and go to work,” he says. “I love getting up to go to work!”

And who can blame him?

The captain and first mate Andy are experts on the wildlife and wonderful sights of the local waterways. It’s obvious they love their jobs and enjoy making their guests feel right at home — especially with their fun, family-friendly humor.

“Most of all, I want the kids who come out on our tours to see the wildlife and nature firsthand,” JR says. “Then, when they go home, they will remember how important it is and try to make a difference for the future.”

Banana Bay currently offers four different nature tours ranging from 90 minutes to three hours.

Sun Splash Family Waterpark

Summer in Cape Coral would not be complete without a trip to Sun Splash Family Waterpark. The iconic 14-acre destination has become a staple in the community and has provided a fun way to beat the heat since 1992.

It’s definitely a great place for the entire family, with pools, exciting slides and water features that appeal to kids and adults.

“I come here every Saturday they are open,” Cape Coral middle schooler Tyler Polhemus, 12, says. “My favorite is definitely the Lazy River. I love it here.”

Beyond the wet and wild attractions, Sun Splash has several snack bars offering reasonably priced meals, cool treats, drinks and more; a gift shop; spaces for private parties; and lots of relaxing sun loungers to soak up the rays.

Tropical Breeze Fun Park

With the motto “Where Fun Meets the Sun,” Tropical Breeze Fun Park certainly offers lots of fun in the sun! The park features a huge 18-hole mini golf course, including the “World’s Longest Hole,” and a large outdoor extreme laser tag area.

The Cape, one of the newest attractions, gets rave reviews.

“This is a really fun and interesting putt-putt course,” says Alex Anders of New Jersey. “I also like that it feels so tropical, and I didn’t feel rushed. Great way to spend an afternoon.”

The park also offers package plans for birthdays and private events, including catering options.

Zirilli’s Chilly Treats

After years in education, Barbara Zirilli-Lonergan knew there was something else she was meant to do — make Italian ice!

Her parents, Chuck and Barbara Anne, were selling their house in Philadelphia, and her father wanted to invest the money from the sale. That’s how Zirilli’s Chilly Treats went from Barbara’s dream to her new career.

“I couldn’t have done any of this without their help, support and love,” Barbara says.

Unfortunately, both of Barbara’s parents passed away shortly after the shop opened in August 2014. When Barbara was going through old family documents, to her shock she discovered her great-great-grandmother was also known for making Italian ice.

“It really, truly feels like this was meant to be,” Barbara says.

Barbara and her husband, Matthew, make all the Italian ice and ice cream in-house and offer a wide array of flavors of both. Zirilli’s is definitely a great place to cool off!
