The homebuilding industry in Southwest Florida has seen many ups and downs, but Marvin Homes is certainly doing something right because they’ve been around since 1972. Founded in Cape Coral by Mary Ann and Vincent Tolisano—that’s how the name Marvin (Mar-Vin) Homes came to be—the company is now owned by Richard Durling, who purchased the company in 1988.

Richard runs the company with Joe Gavitt, who serves as the director of sales and marketing. The two have known each other since they were schoolmates at Bishop Verot High School in Fort Myers.

Over the past 46 years, the company has built more than 3,500 homes and other buildings, and they have expanded their territory, now building from Charlotte County and down into Collier County.

“Not only have we been here longer than any other single-family home builder, but we have been willing to do almost anything, anywhere,” Richard says. “That is one thing Marvin is really known for. We’ve done so many different types of homes and in so many different locations—even North Captiva. We’ve also done commercial buildings, industrial buildings, multi-family, we’ve built for the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Vince and Mary Ann even built a church in the Cape.”

“Richard and the company are currently working on building a rec center for the Seminoles,” Joe adds.

One of their biggest projects at the moment is the unique Funky Fish House Village at Cape Harbour. These custom-built homes are inspired by the historic fish houses of days past in Pine Island Sound. The homes are built on and above the water and offer stunning views, private boat docks, and all the luxury amenities of Cape Harbour are just steps away.

Richard and Joe also work with clients to plan and customize homes to be built on individual lots throughout Southwest Florida. They put a priority on commitment to excellence, attention to detail and a dedication to serving their clients’ needs.

Marvin Homes is flush with awards, including Florida Builder of the Year, Florida Housing Hall of Fame, CCCIA Hall of Fame and the Golden Eagle Award. Richard and the company have also been honored numerous times for “green” building and energy efficiency.

“We really put an emphasis on our energy efficiency programs,” Richard says. “That’s really important to us.”

“We’re also known for top-quality construction,” Joe says. “We have a Diamond Builder Award. It’s given out by the Home Buyers’ Warranty Corporation. They currently insure 15,000 builders across the nation, but less than 50 are considered Diamond Builders.”

The quality of their work over the past 46 years has earned Marvin Homes the reputation of being one of Florida’s most respected home builders.
